On the Impossibility of Implementing Perpetual Failure Detectors in Partially Synchronous Systems

چکیده
In this paper we study the implementability of different classes of failure detectors in several models of partial synchrony. We show that no failure detector with perpetual accuracy (namely, P , Q, S, and W) can be implemented in any of the models of partial synchrony proposed in [3] and [5] in systems with even a single failure. We also show that, in these models of partial synchrony, it is necessary a majority of correct processes to implement a failure detector of class .

On the Implementation of Unreliable Failure Detectors in Partially Synchronous Systems
Unreliable failure detectors were proposed by Chandra and Toueg as mechanisms that provide information about process failures. Chandra and Toueg defined eight classes of failure detectors, depending on how accurate this information is, and presented an algorithm implementing a failure detector of one of these classes in a partially synchronous system. This algorithm is based on all-to-all commu...

متن کاملThe Combined Power of Conditions and Information on Failures to Solve Asynchronous Set Agreement
To cope with the impossibility of solving agreement problems in asynchronous systems made up of n processes and prone to t process crashes, system designers tailor their algorithms to run fast in “normal” circumstances. Two orthogonal notions of “normality” have been studied in the past through failure detectors that give processes information about process crashes, and through conditions that ...
متن کاملFailure Detection with Booting in Partially Synchronous Systems
Unreliable failure detectors are a well known means to enrich asynchronous distributed systems with time-free semantics that allow to solve consensus in the presence of crash failures. Implementing unreliable failure detectors requires a system that provides some synchrony, typically an upper bound on end-to-end message delays. Recently, we introduced an implementation of the perfect failure de...
متن کاملConsensus in Asynchronous Distributed Systems
The distributed consensus problem arises when several processes need to reach a common decision despite failures. The importance of this problem is due to its omnipresence in distributed computation: we need consensus to implement reliable communications, atomic commitment, consistency checks, resources allocations etc. The solvability of this problem is strictly related to the nature of the sy...
